Pre-Wedding Nerves

Something new for me on the blog this week as I share some of my favourite wedding images taken from key parts of the day and explain my thoughts as the wedding photographer as to what I love about each one, a bit like an ‘Image of the week’ I guess only probably not as frequent!  There’s only one way to kick this off really and that’s from the beginning of the day and the all important bridal preparations.  This is where the story of the wedding day all starts to unfold as the bride sets about getting herself ready for the biggest day in her life.  Usually surrounded by bridesmaids and often with key family members on hand to do any last minute tasks, it can either be a bustling scene of activity with frayed nerves, or everything can be a sea of calm.  There are always nerves though, even if they’re not always evident…

One thing that usually makes an appearance during most bridal preparations is the trusty bottle of champagne.  A glass or two of bubbly is always a welcome way to try and calm the nerves before the serious stuff begins and this is where this first image fits in.  This was taken halfway through the bridal preparations as the make up artist was still working on the bride, things were pretty calm with no real sign of butterflies on show.  The champagne corks were popped and after a couple of small sips, I noticed shortly after how the bride was holding her glass.  With one hand gripped around the stem and the other holding the base of the glass tightly, I liked the way it showed exactly how the bride was feeling.  The first real show of nerves during the morning so far, illustrated with the one thing that was supposed to help make her less nervous… Sometimes it’s the things we wouldn’t necessarily look for that show the bigger picture.

Feel free to let me know what you think in the comments section below. For the photographers reading this who like to know the finer details technically, this image was taken with a Nikon D3s and 85mm f/1.4 at f/1.6, with a shutter speed of 1/1250 at ISO500.
