I’m very proud and excited to be able to report that I’ve been accepted into the WPJA (Wedding Photojournalist Association)! The WPJA are an international organisation that recognise the skills of wedding photographers who work in a documentary or photojournalistic style, capturing the natural moments of the day as they happen without too many posed or staged moments. Taken from their website –
‘The Wedding Photojournalist Association (WPJA) is a professional organization composed of photojournalists and wedding photographers from around the world. What sets our members apart in the industry is their candid, documentary approach – a distinctly artistic vision toward wedding photography.
The Wedding Photojournalist Association puts the world’s best wedding photography at your fingertips. We offer a new perspective on wedding photography – quietly capturing the real moments as they happen for the bride and groom. It is our goal to use photography to tell the story of your wedding day, not dictate it for you.’
As a wedding photographer I like to be as unobtrusive and as ‘hands off’ as possible. Having long looked at the WPJA and liked what they stand for, I applied for membership a few weeks ago and received an email on Monday night to confirm I meet their standards. The important thing for me is that this isn’t simply an organisation where you pay your membership fees and get accepted, like with some others. Acceptance is purely based on meeting the strict criteria and high standards set out by the WPJA (including image quality and content, technical and creative technique, website and marketing professionalism, business ethics and communication) and it’s said that only around 5% of all applications are accepted. Again, to quote from their website – ‘To achieve our mission, the WPJA only accepts into membership gifted, honest wedding photojournalists who work tirelessly to deliver excellent photography to their clients.’
I’m a bit humbled to have my name along some of the world’s finest documentary wedding photographers but absolutely delighted all the same!
