Surrey Wedding Photography – Perry and Jo on board Concorde, at Brooklands in Weybridge

Following on from my wedding at Kew Gardens last Thursday, I couldn’t have had anything more different the next day back in Surrey. When the enquiry first came in from Jo and Perry, I treated it as any other enquiry. An enquiry to be the wedding photographer at a wedding to be held in Surrey, at Brooklands in Weybridge. I’d had a couple of enquiries for Brooklands Hotel in the past and thought it would be a nice local wedding to do as it’s just up the road from me (which is always nice for a photographer), and happily exchanged a few emails to arrange a meeting at the venue.

It was pretty much a whole week later that something finally clicked and I realised just what it was I was being asked to do. Yes, a wedding at Brooklands, but more than that it was a wedding on board Concorde (I’d just assumed there was a Concorde room or something like that in the hotel where they were having the ceremony). This then took on a whole new twist, even more so when I found out there had never been a wedding on board the Brooklands Concorde before meaning I’d be the first photographer to ever to capture a wedding on it.

We met for a look around the aircraft and it then dawned on me how small and dark Concorde actually is. With a bride, a groom, a couple of registrars and a photographer to contend with, it was going to be a tough task! Concorde was also due to be moved to a more open area, although this never actually happened (they did turn it around though which gave me more room to get the front of it in) and both Perry and Jo work for BA and as a result they managed to secure some open steps, which gave us a couple of extra photo opportunities.

As was the case the previous day, rain was forecast and this was a bit worrying as apart from ducking underneath Concorde, there wasn’t really anywhere else to go… As it turned out, we had a mixture of rain, sun and clouds throughout the afternoon but thankfully for most of the important shots, it remained dry. During the ceremony I had to assume a position ducked down low to the right of the registrar, practically sitting on the floor and once it was over, the hard part was done, or so I thought. As I was preparing for some pictures utilising the steps, I was offered a lift in a cherry picker to get some shots from above Concorde. Sensing an opportunity, I accepted, despite my complete fear of heights of any kind (and add the fact it was raining as I made my way up in it, although it did stop when all the guests emerged). After fifteen minutes spent at around 50 feet above ground level in a wobbly cherry picker, (not good at the best of times, let alone when trying to take pictures), I was finally back on the ground and was able to finish the day without any problems with heights, small spaces or rain! Before long, everyone went into the reception which was being organised by Brooklands Museum Hospitality.

It was fun and it was certainly a lot different to anything I’ve ever done before, plus I now get to say I’ve been on Concorde (as well as being able to boast that I’m the only wedding photographer to have shot a ceremony on Concorde, at least in Surrey anyway!).
